Avocado-Based Ice Cream Launches in Whole Foods Stores Across the US

An avocado-based ice cream has launched in Whole Foods stores across the US. The ice creams are made by Cado, and do not contain nuts or soy making them suitable for people with most common food allergies.

Speaking to Refinery 29, co-founder Meghan Dowd, said: “We keep the ingredients list very simple. We love that when people try Cado, they have no idea it’s made from avocados. Avocados, because of the quality of the fat and creaminess, had found their way into our smoothies and pies, and so using them to craft ice cream was a natural next step.

“When crafting our first batches of what would become Cado, we had a lightbulb moment. The avocado-base offers more nutrition and a superior fat, doesn’t compete with the flavour, has a really creamy quality, just like ice cream… everybody should be eating this, we thought! It was a great marriage of two things we loved: ice cream and avocados.”

The Cado website describes the product as: “the first organic, dairy-free, avocado-based ice cream made fresh from the tree. With each batch, avocados are picked, ripened and cold-pressed for a truly fresh dessert experience.”

Cado is run by Dowd, her mother Deb and her brother Jack. Avocados are one of this generations’ most favoured fruits, although most commonly used as a vegetable in savoury dishes.
