A vegan community called VeganNation has begun using a cryptocurrency that they call ‘vegancoin’. The community is decentralized and online, bringing together people who are vegan and providing them with vegan products and services.
The platform intends for users to be able to connect with other vegans and order food from other vegans nearby, using their cryptocurrency. VeganNation are planning to make an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), which allows companies to raise funds through accepting other forms of cryptocurrency, for example, Bitcoin.
VeganNation was started by Isaac Thomas, who has been vegan for two years and hopes to make the lifestyle more accessible to people. Speaking to Newsweek, Thomas said: “As the world population is expected to reach over 9 billion people by 2050, veganism will become necessary.
“Consuming this same amount of meat and dairy will be even more unsustainable than it is today.”
Thomas added: “A nation is only strong as its economy and an economy is strong as its currency. I see a great future with the blockchain technology allowing the creation of nations that will be based on shared ideology and beliefs rather than on geographical location. Being able to give our ne nation a monetary system will empower the individuals and the community as a whole.”
Thomas believes that “the same guidelines that make a vegan choose a small cruelty-free restaurant instead of a cheap fast food chain are those [that] will make him choose a cryptocurrency.”
Some people are not convinced by the use of a cryptocurrency in a community that represents compassion and an ethical stance on life, due to the association of cryptocurrencies to criminal activity in the past and the vulnerability of such currencies.
