Ikea Working on New Meatball made from Plant-Based Protein

Ikea working on a plant-protein option

The Swedish founded furniture and homeware manufacturers have announced recently that they are developing a meat-free meatball, that will be packed full of plant-based protein.

Ikea have already launched a number of vegan-friendly products including a seaweed based ‘caviar’ and a dairy-free Mr whippy-style ice cream, so the traditional Swedish-style meatball will be another welcome addition to their ever-increasing vegan food selection.

Sustainability should be on the forefront of every food manufacturers lips now and plant-based proteins have seen a huge rise in popularity over the last couple of years.

Managing Director at Ikea Food Services commented: “We know that the IKEA meatballs are loved by the many people and for years the meatballs have been the most popular dish in our restaurants” La Cour continues “We see a growing demand from our customers to have access to more sustainable food options and we want to meet that need. Our ambition is to make healthier and more sustainable eating easy, desirable and affordable without compromising on taste and texture.”

Initial customer based product testing will begin early next year and when it is officially released, the plant-based meatball will be available globally in all of Ikea’s restaurants. It is sure to make a fantastic alternative to their iconic Swedish meatball, that has been served in Ikea restaurants for 35 years.
