Vegan café launches fundraiser after windows smashed in raid

Burglars have reportedly stolen cash and the till after breaking into a popular east London vegan café late last week.

The incident at The Black Cat Café in Hackney, which operates as a co-operative, has cost the eatery thousands.

Café owner Nacho told The Metro newspaper: “When we arrived we found a huge block of cement, around 25 kg, which was used to break the glass.

“There was a bit of a mess at the cafe, glasses everywhere and some cracks in our recently changed floor. They also took our till with £100 cash inside, plus some bags with coins, around £80 more.

“We think the biggest loss was that we couldn’t open for the morning trade, which means we lost around £1400, plus the door cost of £350.”

Popular blogger Fat Gay Vegan added: “Black Cat Cafe is one of the most loved vegan establishments in the UK and now is our time to prove just how much they are adored

“Understandably, the co-op members who pour their lives into the cafe are incredibly distressed by this experience. This JustGiving page has been set up not only to help Black Cat reopen quickly, but to show them how much their local community and vegans everywhere cherish what they do.”

The fundraising page can be found at justgiving.com.
