Pea-Based Milk Alternative Launches in Waitrose

Waitrose & Partners Launches Sproud, a Pea Milk Alternative

With the demand for dairy-free milk consistently rising and searches on Waitrose.com for alternatives up by 68% compared to last year, the supermarket chain has announced that they will be adding to their ever-increasing range of plant-based milks.

Launched in 2018 and developed in Sweden, Sproud wanted to create a product that closely resembles traditional fresh milk, whilst achieving an eco-friendly, low carbon footprint method of production. Made from Swedish-grown, protein-rich yellow peas that contain vital amino acids, the peas used to create Sproud have the added benefit of being very efficient to cultivate and harvest, requiring around a third less water to grow than soy and ten times less than almonds, requiring only a small area to grow.

Sproud is nut, lactose, gluten and soy-free as well as being low in fat and sugar and containing two times the amount of protein than oat milk and five times the protein than almond milk. It has also been designed to have 365 day shelf life, avoiding unnecessary chilled distribution and therefore, reducing wastage.

Sproud Original drink, RRP £1.90 and Sproud Barista, RRP £1.80 are available in shops now and exclusively on Waitrose.com.
