Nottingham pub ditches meat and dairy

A Nottingham pub-and former home of a ‘sausage society’-is set to introduce a 100 per cent vegan menu from next month.

The Peacock on Mansfield Road is currently undergoing refurbishment and will re-open in September.

The Victorian pub has been asking its customers for menu suggestions. So far these include vegan cheesecake, mushroom burgers, macaroni cheese, and tofu Thai curry.

The previous menu featured a combination of meat and plant-based dishes.

Landlord of 17 years, Michael Scholes told the Nottingham Post he made the decision because of the growing trend for vegan food.

He said: “Vegan food has come on leaps and bounds. I eat it a lot with friends. I don’t feel we’re excluding anyone.

“I am thrilled with the response. I thought am I doing the right thing? But this has made me a lot more confident.”

According to the Nottingham Post vegan Adrian Bhagat, who runs Bluebird Wholefoods, further up Mansfield Road, in Sherwood, said the move was ‘brilliant news’.

He added: “The last year or two there have been a lot of new places serving vegan food. The provision for vegans has exploded.”
